The Nervous Tenor’s AuditionThe Red Skelton Show season 3, originally broadcast October 13, 1953

Monologue

Red opens the program with a demonstration of different people at a movie theater, such as a man running for the streetcar to get to the theater, the overly-grinning ticket taker, the usher, a movie-goer trying to find a seat in the middle of the row, and a man who can’t see the screen because the lady in front of him has a high hat.

The Nervous Tenor’s Audition

The Nervous Tenor is George Appleby, who uncharacteristically has a loving and sympathetic wife. He’s got a chance to audition for David Rose — but keeps fainting at the sight of the man! But he’s not afraid to sing in front of his wife, when he thinks they’re alone, and does a touching rendition of “Foggy Foggy Dew” – until he realizes that David Rose is back, and he faints again!
